A Great Place to Retire To

Sparkling City by the Sea, Corpus Christi, Texas
I am not a native Texan, but for the last forty years I have lived from time to time in the Coastal bend of Texas usually in the Corpus Christi area. Twelve years ago I made the decision to move to this beautiful region to retire. Corpus Christi is one of the most laid back cities I have ever lived in. The whole attitude of the city is one of comfort and being at ease. The cultural atmosphere is diverse; everywhere you see the influence of our Hispanic neighbors to the south, but there is also a Celtic Festival in the fall, a Czechoslovakian Festival and an Asian Museum. The city abounds in many fine dining establishments in almost any cuisine you wish to sample; from Kolaches to Calamari.
Managing to live comfortably on a Social Security check was one of the main reasons I came back to Corpus Christi. My first act was to invest in a travel trailer, a twenty-seven foot Nomad. It was a nice little fit with a kitchen and bathroom and plenty of storage spaces. Since it was designed to sleep six I had no problems, just my two dogs and myself. I found a small well- kept RV Park that offered long term lot rentals for $150 a month and this included water. My electric averaged about $100 a month. The winters are very mild with an electric heater only being needed perhaps ten times the whole winter, summers a fan worked except on the hottest of days and then it was off to the Mall or the Dollar Cinema. There is always a breeze off the Bay, so sitting outside was nearly always pleasant. My only other bills were for my cell phone, $50 a month and my internet/cable access which was $55 a month. Out of my check this left me around $500 a month for food, gas and auto upkeep, and miscellaneous.
I did fine; there are plenty of events that are reasonable, beautiful parks, great beaches, and a fantastic transit system. The medical facilities here are among the best in south Texas and there is a chance to futher your education if you wish through either Del Mar Community College of Texas A & M Corpus Christi. By the way, casual wear is the norm here so you don’t have to spend a fortune on something to wear. I love this city!

Corpus Christi is a lovely area, and I have known people who have retired there. Great pictures, and an interesting hub.
